“N* Collection” presents First International Master-class of Natasha Lopusova-Tomskaya (Des Moines, Iowa, USA), february- 2007
The idea of the master-class originated among American doll-makers (Cindee Moyer and Christine Ruggle in particular) after the report at the NIADA Conference when the audience was smitten by depth and variety of images as well as craftsmanship of Russian artists. Just six months for arrangements – and in January 2007 eleven doll-makers from USA and Canada got together to participate in the master-class of N. Lopusova-Tomskaya, a famous artist, teacher of Club-studio “N* Collection”, participant of the project DOLLART.RU. The master-class was organized on the highest level, all technical problems were settled brilliantly, so in three days almost incredible amount of work was fulfilled: besides theory on creation of a doll’s image, color, sculpting, papier-mache technique, costume design and painting the participants managed to make a basic doll head, body, feet and partly hands. But to achieve this they worked day and night: after the 8-hour working day all students and the teacher got together again in the evening and kept gluing-sanding till 2 a.m.! But all of them enjoyed it: the enthusiasm of the teacher matched this of the students. There was a real atmosphere of mutual understanding, the students literally fell in love with Natasha and even picked up some Russian words from her: da, njet, spasibo, khorosho. And she kept on correcting slightly crooked dolls’ hands and feet with untiring energy, explaining, answering questions, so generous to share everything she knew herself. Everybody was satisfied with the result and Natasha, a splendid doll artist and teacher, was invited again to the Holland, USA and Canada. We hope this master-class will start a whole series of Russian master-classes abroad – we do have a lot to share!
